Meditation in the Buddhist sects: Zen, Pure Land and Tantra

UBF: On the evening of July 20, 2016, the Most Venerable Thich Duc Thang hosted a seminar on "Meditation in the Buddhist sects." Attending there are about 15 Buddhists belonging to the United Buddhist Foundation, Viet Nalanda Foundation, Mr. Nguyen Giac Phan Tan Hai, Mr. Tam Huy Huynh Kim Quang, Journalist Nguyen Thanh Huy... We briefly recorded below the main content has been taught by the Most Venerable Thich Duc Thang. Photographer Vo Van Tuong was also present to record the images of the event.

The Lotus Sutra teaches that the Buddha was born for a great cause "to open up the mind of the Buddha." In the first transformation of the Dharma, he used the Four Noble Truths to indicate the path of cultivation for all sentient beings, from suffering to suffering, to the attainment of liberation.

On the path of that practice, the ultimate goal of all Buddhists is towards liberation, even though one may choose a different method. Over the years of study of meditation and mindfulness, practice, I myself - the Most Venerable Thich Duc Thang - realize that all the different methods of cultivation in Buddhism all have a function. The general is to purify three karma: body, speech and mind. When the three karmas are pure, the moment one attains liberation. If it is partially purified, it is a part of liberation. If it reaches total purity, it is the complete liberation which is no different from the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

From this perception, it can be seen that meditation is also one of the methods of purifying body, speech and mind. Moreover, each school can use a different method, but the general can not go beyond this purpose. For example, a Buddhist monk who specializes in reciting the Buddha's name will attain the purity of the three karmas, while the sutra, if accomplished, will attain such pure purity. When the three karmas are purified, all karmic retribution stops, thoughts of greed, anger, and si are removed, and it is through this that the practitioner attains liberation.

When we are aware of meditation in various Buddhist sects in this way, we will see consistency in the practice and purification of the three karmic states: body, speech, and mind. Meditation in each sect may be different, but the purpose of the meditation as well as the function of the practice is not different. For a pure-hearted practitioner, the recitation of the Buddha is also meditation, or for a tantric practitioner, the retreat can also be considered a form of meditation, and also has the power to assist the three karmic practices. Pure, the basis for achieving liberation.

The Most Venerable also explained the above implications, and then answered some of the questions raised by the audience. Also on this occasion, the Viet Nalanda Group officially informed about Thubten Chodron's Dharma talk with the theme "Training Center" sponsored by Viet Nālanda, which will be held on Friday 22 July 2016. , From 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Vietnamese Press Office: 14841 Moran Street, Westminster, CA (Phone: 714-894-2500)
